Frequently Asked Questions – Blended Soil Mixes
Q. What is a custom blended soil mix?
A custom blended soil mix is a professionally formulated combination of compost, organic matter, and mineral amendments designed for a specific application—such as raised beds, planters, vegetable gardens, lawns, or stormwater systems. Unlike basic topsoil, blended soils are engineered to provide proper drainage, aeration, moisture retention, and nutrient balance.
Q. How do I know which blended soil mix is right for my project?
The right blend depends on how and where it will be used. Raised beds and vegetable gardens typically require a nutrient-rich, well-draining mix, while planters often benefit from lighter blends with added aeration. Bioretention and bioswale projects require engineered soil media designed for infiltration and filtration. If you’re unsure, our team can help recommend or create a mix based on your project details.
Q. Can I customize my soil blend with specific additives?
Yes. We offer a wide range of organic and mineral additives—including composts, pumice, sand, biochar, manures, fertilizers, and soil conditioners—to fine-tune drainage, fertility, structure, and performance. Custom blends can be adjusted for plant type, soil conditions, and environmental requirements.
Q. Are your blended soils organic?
Many of our blended soil mixes can be made fully organic using OMRI-listed inputs. If organic compliance is important for your project—such as vegetable gardens, vineyards, or certified organic landscapes—let us know and we’ll tailor the blend accordingly.
Q. Do you offer blended soils for bioretention and stormwater projects?
Yes. We supply engineered Bioretention Soil Media (BSM) designed for bioswales, rain gardens, and low-impact development (LID) systems. These mixes are formulated to meet performance requirements for infiltration, pollutant removal, and long-term stability.
Q. How are blended soils delivered?
All blended soil mixes are delivered in bulk by dump truck directly to your home or jobsite. Our residential-friendly trucks are suitable for driveways and tight access areas. The material is dumped in one location unless otherwise arranged.
Q. How much blended soil should I order?
Quantity depends on the size and depth of your project. As a general rule, one cubic yard covers about 100–150 square feet at 2–3 inches deep. For raised beds and planters, volume calculations are based on length × width × depth. We’re happy to help you calculate the right amount before ordering but most custom blends require a 10 cubic yard minimum order.
Q. Will the blended soil look exactly the same every time?
Because blended soils use natural organic materials, slight variations in color, texture, and moisture are normal. These variations do not affect performance and are typical of professionally blended, compost-based soil products.
