The Best-Compacting DG for Paths, Patios & Walkways
Our Signature Decomposed Crushed Granite (DG) is the most reliable, best-compacting DG we offer — and the material we confidently recommend when customers ask “Which DG holds up the best?”
This premium blend of angular crushed granite fines and natural stone particles is engineered to lock together tightly when compacted, creating a firm, stable surface that outperforms standard decomposed granite commonly sold at rock yards.
Unlike loose or sandy DG that shifts, ruts, or washes out, our signature DG compacts into a hard, durable finish that holds its shape under foot traffic, garden carts, wheelbarrows, and light maintenance vehicles.
Bay Area Gold DG is the go-to path-fines product for:

Frequently Asked Questions – Bay Area Decomposed Granite (DG)
Q. What is decomposed granite (DG)?
DG is crushed granite rock that compacts tightly when installed correctly. It’s commonly used for walkways, patios, and paths as a natural alternative to concrete or pavers.
Q. Does this DG compact better than regular DG?
Yes. This is our best-compacting DG, made from angular crushed granite with a balanced fines content. It locks together far better than loose or sandy DG.
Q. Do I need stabilizer for this DG?
In most residential applications, no stabilizer is required. Proper moisture and mechanical compaction achieve excellent results. Stabilizer can be added for steep slopes or heavy-use areas if specified by the installer.
Q. How much DG do I need?
As a general rule:
1 cubic yard covers ~150 sq ft at 2″ depth
We recommend 2.5–3″ before compaction
Use our material calculator or contact us for help estimating.
Q. Where will the DG be dumped?
DG is dumped in your driveway or a flat, accessible area. Dump location must be clear of overhead wires, trees, and obstacles.
Q. Will the color vary?
Yes. DG is a natural material. Slight color variation due to moisture, quarry source, and batch differences is normal and expected.
